The Bridge Club has now been running five years. We have many new members and enjoy our card playing in a very relaxed atmosphere.
We are always happy to welcome new members, so if you are interested please contact Andrew or Pauline Penny or just pop along to the Baptist Church hall on Thursday evenings at 7.30 pm.
DOES BRIDGE- CALM THE NERVES?
Winston Churchill was playing bridge one night with Lord Beaverbrook and two other friends when a messenger entered the room carrying a box. Churchill broke the seal and extracted a small bit of' flimsy paper that said "Germany declares war on France." The game ended and shortly after, World War II began.
Later in the war, when 800 Allied ships became fogbound prior to tile 1942 African invasion, somebody asked 'What do we do now?' General Dwight Eisenhower replied "Let's have a game of bridge". They did and were relaxed for the successful invasion when the clouds cleared away.
QUOTATION (Somerset Maughan)
`If I had my way, I would have children taught bridge as a matter of Course, just as they are taught dancing. In the end it will be more Useful to them...you can play bridge as long as you can sit up at a table and tell one card from another. In fact, when all else fails -sport, love, ambition - bridge remains a solace and an entertainment'.
