| Essex Autistic Society | The Essex Autistic Society exists to 'promote the welfare, education, treatment and care' of people with autism and in so doing supports and encourages their families, friends and carers. To this end, we work closely with a number of support groups and branches in the area. | |
| Pinpoint Cancer Appeal | Southend Hospital's appeal to raise £350,000 for a state of the art radiotherapy scanner - to increase the precision of treatment for people fighting cancer. | |
| Macmillan Nurses | All 70 Macmillan nurses who work in Essex are senior registered nurses, with specialist training in cancer care. Macmillan provides funding normally for the first three years, and long-term funding after this is taken up by the NHS. The other services are provided with the same initial funding principle. | |
| Southend Lifeboats | Southend is one of the busiest lifeboat stations in the country. It has two lifeboats and a hovercraft. As part of the Royal National Lifeboat Institute it relies solely on donations. | |
| St Luke's Hospice | The local hospice for the area has been running for sixteen years. It offers a range of services from in-patient care, support and other services. | |
| Angelmans Syndrome | This is an appeal to raise funds to help a three year old girl who has Angelmans Syndrome. genetic/neurodevelopmental disorder. Ellie’s symptoms are low muscle tone; she cannot crawl, walk or stand unattended. Ellie cannot speak and gets very frustrated as she cannot communicate her needs and feelings. She also sleeps very poorly and needs constant care and attention. Her overall development is severely delayed. As if this is not enough to contend with Ellie has Asthma which often requires long hospital stays, she needs regular nebulisers and has to take steroids, which make her gain weight, making her mobility even more difficult. |
After a voting process which entitles all people at the Annual General Meeting to vote for one of the nominated Charities, St Luke's Hospice and the Southend Lifeboat station went through the final vote.
The final vote saw St Luke's Hospice receive the most votes and we are delighted that we have an outstanding charity that does so much for local people that we will all be working for this year. However, after the voting is over, there is always a feeling that "the other charities all deserve so much support as well - it is so hard to choose between them" as one person described her feelings.
This year, please look at the web sites for all the nominated charities.
